So what is covered in KLC’s Online English Lessons?

Literacy is one skill that is beneficial in all subjects. The online English lessons prioritise all the components of literacy and equip pupils with the knowledge and practical skills they need to flourish in all aspects of learning. The skills taught in the online classes are the same for years 4 & 5 but the resources used for year 5 pupils will be more challenging in nature.

Topic: Reading, Comprehension and Creative Writing

Pupils will study short stories and extracts from novels guided by their online tutor. This topic focuses on understanding the elements of a good story. Pupils are taught to unpick and understand the features of a story so they can apply the techniques into their own creative pieces.

Skills Taught:

Develop reading strategies, reinforcing their knowledge of grammatical structures and their contextual understanding.

Pupils will be taught how to look past the simple literal understanding and start to use inference and deduction to gain different interpretations.

Develop an understanding of figurative language techniques and be able to identify the effect of a variety of sentence types.

Skim reading and obtain detailed knowledge through specific reading which improves their comprehension skills.

Learn how to plan, draft and revise effectively, proofread and discuss and evaluate their own and others writing.

Learn how to use a range of punctuation: full stops, question marks, exclamation marks, commas and apostrophes.

Continue to develop their spelling and grammar, paying close attention to their use of appropriate terminology, vowels, consonants and homophones.

Develop knowledge of standard English and how to use ambitious vocabulary.

Gain a secure understanding of how to build sentences and paragraphs.

Topic: Non- Fiction: Essay writing and Text analysis

Pupils will study persuasive and analytical techniques and learn to express their thoughts through letter, diary and analytical writing.

Skills Taught:

Gain knowledge of subject specific terminology and learn about a range of persuasive language techniques.

Tailoring writing to fit for the purpose and audience.

Selecting appropriate language to convince the reader.

Accurate use of a range of punctuation: full stops, question marks, exclamation marks, inverted commas and apostrophes.

Accurate writing structure -paragraphing and mastering the use of simple, compound and complex sentences.

Ability to work well as part of a group, making valuable contributions and to deal with opposing viewpoints in an appropriate way.

Topic: Poetry and Literature: Reading and Writing

Pupils will study a range of poetry and develop their ability to identify multiple layers of meaning. Pupils learn to infer, analyse poems and create their own.

Skills Taught:

Pupils study classical and modern poetry and play scripts.

Develops an understanding of figurative language techniques and be able to identify the effect of a variety of sentence types.

Learn how to look beyond literal descriptions of characters and begin to analyse them.

Write their own poems paying attention to linguistic choices for an intended effect.

Value of planning when creating their own poems and plays.

Form and structure of poems

Social and historical contextual information about poets and the society they lived in.

Considering the writer’s messages to readers and the intentions behind it.
